GOOD FRIDAY DEMOLITION DERBY TO CONCLUDE GRAFTON SPEEDWAY SEASON
BY DENNIS NEWLYN
A bash and crash demolition derby will bring down the curtain on the final meeting of the season Good Friday night at Hession’s Auto Parts Grafton Speedway.
The last car running will be declared the winner of this unique mechanical bull fight on four wheels.
It’s the ultimate survival of the fittest test in which metal will be mangled and cars crunched in a battle to the finish.
The rule book for a demolition derby is pretty straight forward. The first rule is to eliminate your opponent by smashing the opposition out of the contest. Rule two is standard procedure: Refer to rule one!!
There are really no specific rules. It’s a case of hit or be hit, smash or be smashed in a bid to be the victor rather than the vanquished.
Controlling officials for the demolition derby will inspect all cars prior to the event to ensure that specific safety procedures and regulations are met before drivers are allowed to compete. While these events are fun and provide a great family entertainment, safety for all concerned is the priority.
“We all like to see a demolition derby, but we don’t want to see anyone get hurt, so there are safety standards with the competing cars that have to be met,” promoter David Lander said.
On the racing side of the programme, the appearance by the V8 Dirt Modifieds will be one of the highlights on the card.
The 30-lap V8 Dirt Modified Rumble main event will be supported with heats earlier in the night.
Racing categories also featured on the big variety programme include SP Sedans, Street Stocks, National Four Cylinder Sedans, Production Sedans and Junior Sedans.
It has been another big season of racing at the Grafton venue during the summer months. Lander ran a few less meetings during the 2017-18 season than in previous years with a greater emphasis on quality rather than quality. The track now enters into its winter recess before re-opening for another racing term toward the end of the year.
Gates open at 3PM Good Friday and racing commences at 6PM.
