GORTON OVERCOMES WET TRACK AND WINS V8 DIRT MODIFIED MAIN EVENT
BY DENNIS NEWLYN LEE Gorton drove a calculated race to take out the V8 Dirt Modified main event at Hession’s Auto Parts Grafton Speedway Saturday night, March 10. Another highlight on the programme was the running of the Junior Sedan Grafton Cup taken out by Ryley Smith over Sam Mooney and Zac Brimms. Showers made the racing surface difficult to handle, however Gorton had complete control and handled the tough conditions well. The weather also meant that all main events were singe lane starts. Gorton was the early leader in the 20-lap V8 Dirt Modified feature race. He established a comfortable margin from Geoff Hayes and Scott Quirk in the early laps. The race distance had earlier been reduced because of the wet conditions. The pattern and running order remained unchanged until a caution period slowed the action with seven laps reaming. It was at this point Quirk threw down the challenge to Gorton and momentarily reached the lead in an exciting battle at the head of the field. Gorton maintained his place at the head of the field, while Quirk looked to have a second placing safely secured until he went high on the track and allowed Hayes through into second placing in the extreme latter stages. At the chequered flag it was a win to Gorton over Hayes and Quirk. Ryley Smith handed the wet conditions really well and had good command of the 10-lap Junior Sedan Grafton Cup. He was smooth and safe at the front of the field as he took a deserving win. Michael Butcher extended his lead in the Wingless Sprintcar Driver to America series after he was placed second in the 10-lap main event. Mason Cattell took out the feature race after he led from the outset. Jacob Jolley, who earlier battled for a prominent position near the front of the pack with Matt Wright, ultimately finished third. Other feature race winners were: Chris Corbett (Street Stocks) and Tony Blanch (AMCAs).
