NEWSTEAD SET FOR TITLE DEFENCE AT TREVAN FORD GRAFTON SPEEDWAY
BY DENNIS NEWLYN
DEFENDING titleholder Shane Newstead has track tested a new car in preparation for the AMCA Nationals’ Andrew Walker Classic class at Trevan Ford Grafton Speedway Good Friday night (April 14.)
Newstead put his car through its paces in a shakedown run at the Narrabri Speedway last weekend in preparation for his title defence.
He was well-satisfied with the performance of his 350 V8 Chevy machine following the workout in the countdown to Friday.
He is well aware he will face some tough opposition and needs to bring his A-game to the table if he is to retain the crown.
“It won’t be easy, that’s for sure,” Shane acknowledged in relation to the tough competition he faces.
“The way Tony Blanch is running at Grafton at the moment, he is going to be hard to beat and there are other strong contenders as well,” Newstead said.
Shane will compete in a machine purpose-built by Lismore’s Rocket Chassis company owned and operated by long time race car constructor Danny Smith.
Newstead, who is a former New South Wales Champion, has been a consistent performer in the Andrew Walker Classic in recent years at the Grafton venue and has recorded a couple of major places prior to his victory last season.
Qualifying heats will play an important role in determining grid positions for the 25-lap final.
Highest point scorers from the heats will start at the front of the field in the decider.
Race organisers have received a strong entry list from drivers in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, while Daniel Brooks has travelled all the way from Tasmania to represent the Apple Isle in the running of the 2017 Andrew Walker Classic.
This will be the final meeting of the 2016-17 season at Trevan Ford Grafton Speedway and promoter David Lander has organised a big variety programme to bring down the curtain on the term.
The AMCA Nationals Sedans will be supported with events for Street Stocks, Four Cylinder Sedans, Junior Sedans, LTD Sedans, Production Sedans, Litre Sprints and V8 Dirt Modifieds.
Gates open at 3PM and racing commences at 6.
