WINGLESS AND V8 DIRT MODIFIED DRIVERS CHASE TITLES

DENNIS NEWLYN

A Wingless Sprintcar driver will be the recipient of a return air ticket to America and a V8 Dirt Modified competitor will walk away with the New South Wales Championship trophy in “Major Events Night” at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway this Saturday.

It is the biggest meeting on the 2016-17 Lismore fixture schedule for the Wingless division as the season premiership culminates with a 15-lap “Race to the States” to determine the winner of the Lismore District Workers’ Club-Queensland Speedway Spares Driver to America series.

“There is plenty on the line for a number of drivers this Saturday night,” promoter David Lander said yesterday.

“The final in the contest for the air ticket will be between the top ten highest point scorers throughout the season.

“These drivers have qualified after scoring points throughout the previous 11 rounds to make the play-off. It should be the best Wingless Sprintcar race of the season.

“We also have received a very strong entry list for the NSW V8 Dirt Modified Championship and a series of heat races will determine the qualifiers for the final of the state title.”

David Eggins is the point score leader in the Wingless Sprintcar division and will start off the pole position in the 15-lap shootout.

The winner of the race will not only be recipient of the American trip but also two tickets to the world’s most famous Sprintcar race, the Knoxville Nationals at the Marion County Fairground in Knoxville, Iowa.

It’s a great prize and Eggins definitely has a slight advantage entering the final starting off the front row. But there are any number of winning chances in the field, which also includes, Kevin Willis, Mick Santin, Trent Martin, Mason Cattell, Matt Wright, Brad Claridge, Scott Marsh, Robbie Mazzer and Steve Mcinness.

Australian V8 Dirt Modified Champion Kevin Britten returns to Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway to contest the state title. Earlier this month Britten retained his National Championship after an impressive victory at Rockhampton Speedway.

Britten, who has dominated the V8 Dirt Modified division in recent years, is one of the favourites for the 2017 NSW Championship. He was the standout star of the 2015-16 season when he won every major state and also the Australian title.

Steve Milthorpe comes into the field a last start title winner following his recent success in the Queensland Championship.

Lismore regular and former Australian Champion Andrew Pezzutti, a previous NSW Champion, has nominated. Another former national titleholder, Scott Cannon also will be on hand. Other strong runners who have entered for the NSW V8 Dirt Modified Championship are Phil McNamara, Brent Hall, Ray Eggins, David Clarke, Trent Scofield, Scott Quirk, Paul Booker and Chris Corbett.

The Wingless Sprintcars and V8 Dirt Modifieds will be supported with events for AMCA Nationals, Four Cylinder Sedans, Junior Sedans and Production Sedans.

Gates open at 3PM and the first race will go under the flag at 6.
