THREE WALL FIRE ACT SET FOR GRAFTON SPEEDWAY SEASON OPENER
BY DENNIS NEWLYN
PROMOTER David Lander has always believed a night at the speedway has to cater for more than just the rev heads.
He says it’s all about family entertainment and that will most definitely be the theme when the gates open this coming Saturday night, September 30, for the 2017-18 season at Hessions Auto Parts Grafton Speedway. Amongst a host of car events will be a death-defying three-wall fire act.
Daredevil and three time New South Wales Four Cylinder Sedan Champion Trent Dhu will strap himself to the bonnet of a car which will crash through three timber fire walls!
There will also be two massive fireworks displays during the night in what will be one of the most impressive season opening shows in the long history of the Grafton Speedway.
“We are in the entertainment business,” David said this week.
“Sure, we want to put on good speedway races with plenty variety for the fans and particularly the rev heads, but we must spread that appeal further to the whole family who come to our venue for an enjoyable night out.
“It’s also giving value for money so that when they leave the ground at the end of the night, they will not only be happy and entertained but also want to return again for our next race meeting.”
That has been Lander’s promotional philosophy since he first entered the speedway administrative arena in 1989.
When not crashing through fire walls, Trent Dhu races in the highly competitive Four Cylinder Sedan category which is programmed for this Saturday night.
It will be a hectic night for Dhu who takes it all in his stride.
“I’ve done this fire wall stunt before, so it’s all part of the night’s show that I am involved with and enjoy,” he said.
There is certainly plenty of variety on the race card with eight race car categories listed for track action.
The racing highlight of the night will be the running of the annual V8 Dirt Modified Spring Cup over 30 laps.
Street Stocks, National Four Cylinder Sedans, Junior Sedans, Wingless Sprints, AMCA Sedans, Production Sedans and Lightning Sprints are also on the spectacular race card.
The first of two huge fireworks displays will be held in early part of the night to especially cater for the children in attendance. The initial event presents a more suitable time in the evening rather than the second sky show in the latter stages of the fixture. However, no matter the time of the display, both pyrotechnic performances will be spectacular with a kaleidoscope of colour in the night sky.
