HOME TOWN VICTORY AT GRAFTON SPEEDWAY SEASON OPENER
Andrew Firth took out the V8 Dirt Modified Clarence Valley Spring Cup over 30 laps at the opening meeting of the season at Hessions Auto Parts Grafton Speedway, Saturday night, September 30.
Firth was in the right spot at the right time after leader Geoff Hayes blew a tyre in the latter stages of the event.
Meanwhile, Firth was followed to the chequered flag by runner-up Tony Dunn and third-placed David Blanch.
The gruelling contest was highlighted with some intense battles for the major placings.
In the initial stages Scott Quirk took the race to Hayes, while Firth and Dunn were also involved in a battle for positions.
Quirk was in a challenging position for the lead and looked set to figure in the placings before an untimely spun put him at the back of the field for the restart.
Nick Knott was also in the mix as he challenged Hayes in the middle stages of the race, while Phil McNamara also was in contention.
Despite a high rate of attrition, the event provided plenty of excitement. McNamara passed Dunn before Graham Holland slammed into the wall.
Then Hayes blew a tyre as he took the white flag win one lap remaining and was sidelined. This gave the lead to Firth who raced to victory.
Despite Hayes’ bad luck, Firth was always there as a major contender and was a worthy winner after being competitive throughout the main event.
V8 Dirt Modified Heats were won by Dunn, Hayes and McNamara.
Steve McInnes took a wild ride in the Wingless division. Although he was able to extract himself from the wrecked car unaided, he was later taken to hospital for observation.
The Wingless main event was won by Matt Wright.
Other main event winners at the big variety programme were: Josh Boyd (Junior Sedans), Jamie Smith (Street Stocks), Shane Newstead (AMCA Nationals) and Danny Stone (Lightning Sprints).
The next fixture at Hessions Auto Parts Grafton Speedway will be the monster demolition derby on October 28. Nominations are still open for the bash and crash spectacular and for entry information, rules and safety regulations, phone 0408222908 during business hours Monday to Friday.
