FIREWORKS TO LIGHT UP NIGHT SKY AT GRAFTON, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30.
BY DENNIS NEWLYN
THERE will be fireworks both on and off the track Saturday, December 30, at Hession’s Auto Parts Grafton Speedway with a massive pyrotechnics display and the running of the annual V8 Dirt Modified Christmas Cup.
The race meeting represents a countdown to 2018 as fireworks light up the night sky. On the track the competition will be fierce as a good entry list battles for honours in the V8 Dirt Modified division.
“I think we have come up with a bit of everything for the whole family at this Grafton meeting,” promoter David Lander said.
The fireworks display will be held midway through the evening, also serving as the ideal build up to the Christmas Cup.
“There are a number of contenders for this race so it is hard to pick a winner and that adds to the anticipation of the event,” Lander added.
Local drivers certainly come into contention, while the two car team comprising Andrew Firth and Nick Knott are certainly pre-race favourites.
Both drivers have posted some good results on the demanding Grafton circuit in recent seasons. Firth has been in good form this term and he knows the layout of the Grafton track very well.
“I think it will still be a tough night at the office as there are some good drivers entered and anything can happen,” Firth said.
The heats will go a long way to determining the starting positions in the main event and if the top drivers get favourable starting spots on the grid, this race could be a very tough contest.
Brent Hall, Phil McNamara, Jai Stephenson, Scott Quirk, Geoff Rose, David Blanch, Chris and Dale Corbett are among the competitors entered who are winning chances.
It will also be a big night for Wingless Sprintcar drivers racing for points in another round of the Driver to America series.
With the Boxing Day washout at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway, the points remain close amongst the top three in a congested leader board.
Only eighty points separate the top three as Trent Martin (280 points) leads from Mason Cattell (205) and Michael Butcher (200).
In addition to V8 Dirt Modifieds and Wingless Sprints, racing for Street Stocks, National Four Cylinder Sedans, Junior Sedans and AMCA Nationals also will be featured.
Gates open at 3PM and racing commences at 6.
