JET POWER NEEDED FOR STATE TITLE DRIVERS

BY DENNIS NEWLYN

DRIVERS competing in the NSW Four Cylinder Sedan Championship Saturday night, February 10,  at Hession’s Auto Parts Grafton Speedway would surely like to borrow the engine out of the jet car that also will make a flame-throwing demonstration run on the same programme.

The state title for the National Four Cylinder Sedan division has attracted a very strong entry list that ensures the event will be a keenly contested affair.

This division of Australian speedway is a small car low budget class featuring family passenger car brands and models such as Nissan Pulsar/Bluebird, Sigma, Ford Telstar/Cortina/Sierra, Toyota Corolla/Alteeza and Mazda.

It is a competitive class that also serves as a stepping stone for budding competitors who plan to run in either the V8 Dirt Modified, Sprintcar, Speedcar or Super Sedan categories in the future.

Luke Watt (Toyota Corolla) is the gun driver at present and is on a winning run of main event successes at both the Grafton and Lismore circuits.

He is in top form, but he can expect some tough competition from Trent Dhu (Ford Telstar) who is always competitive and has a string of podium results beside his name in recent seasons.

Other drivers who come into contention are Gerry Flood (Ford Cortina), Tim Weir (Ford Sierra), Jamie Marsden (Ford Telstar) and Ben Stead (Honda Prelude).

A series of heats will be held before the NSW Championship final.

Meanwhile the jet car, which is a 1995 street-registered Daihatsu Mira road vehicle, is a show within a show.

This machine is powered by a turbo Meca Marbore IIC engine originally from France that produces approximately 2, 600 horsepower.

When at full thrust, the flames extend 40 meters from the rear of the car in a spectacular demonstration. These flames also generate enough heat and burning capabilities to literally torch a car to the ground!

The jet car and National Four Cylinder Sedans will be supported with racing for V8 Dirt Modifieds, Wingless Sprintcars, Production Sedans, Street Stocks, Junior Sedans and AMCAs in a big variety programme.

Gates open at 3pm and racing commences at 6.
